Apart from Konkani, he is also proficient in Marathi, English, and Hindi. She did her schooling at Canosa Convent Girls School, located in Mumbai. She later joined the prestigious Sophia College to pursue philosophy. Preetika Rao, her sister is a columnist, model, and a southern film actress.
During her college life, Amrita Rao auditioned for a Fairever face cream advertisement. Sooner or later, she appeared in several commercials and did various photo shoots. Due to her performance in the Bru Coffee advertisement as well as the Cadbury Perk Karva Chauth advertisement, she received several job offers from various directors in B-Town.
Apart from advertisements and photo shoots, she has also made appearances in various music videos by famous artists like Alisha Chinai. Even after making her mark in the acting department, Amrita Rao continues to model and walk the ramp for various well-known designers as a guest model.
Amrita Rao first established her foot in the glamorous world of Bollywood through the 2002 film ‘Ab Ke Baras’ directed by Raj Kanwar. She acted with Arya Babbar for the first time. After this, in 2003, she acted with Shahid Kapoor in ‘Ishq Vishk’ directed by Ken Ghosh. The film became a huge success at the box office and Amrita’s portrayal of the character Payal was highly appreciated and she became an overnight star.
This was soon followed by Indra Kumar’s comedy flick ‘Masti’ (2004) starring Amrita Rao, Vivek Oberoi, Aftab Shivdasani, Lara Dutta, Riteish Deshmukh, Ajay Devgan, Tara Sharma and Genelia D’Souza. She then appeared in the film ‘Main Hoon Na’ starring Shah Rukh Khan and Zayed Khan, written and directed by Farah Khan. The film was a super hit in theaters and Amrita received much praise for her performance in the film.
In 2005, Amrita appeared in Mahesh Manjrekar’s ‘Wah! If life is like this! ‘, and John Matthew Mathen’s musical thriller ‘Shikhar’ starring Ajay Devgan, Bipasha Basu and Shahid Kapoor.
The following year in 2006, Amrita Rao made her appearance in Indra Kumar’s ‘Pyaare Mohan’ opposite Vivek Oberoi. He Soraj R. Played the lead role with Shahid Kapoor in Barjatya’s film ‘Vivah’. The film was a blockbuster at the box office and both Shahid and Amrita won several awards for their exceptional performances in the film.
She started the year 2007 with a guest appearance in the Hindi comedy flick ‘Hey Baby’ directed by Sajid Khan and produced by Sajid Nadiadwala. Her first Tamil film was ‘Aatishi’ directed by Samarpan Reddy in which Amrita Rao played herself opposite Ramesh Babu.
In the year 2008, she appeared in two films: E. Niwas’ drama film ‘My Name is Anthony Gonsalves and Shyam Benegal’s ‘Welcome to Sajjanpur’. The following year in 2009, Amrita played the character of Nandini in Ajit Pal Mangat’s cricket-based film ‘Vijay’. She also played the role of Mansi in Neeraj Vora’s ‘Shortcut’ opposite the famous Arshad Warsi. ‘Shortcut’ was a remake of a Malayalam blockbuster flick named ‘Udhaananu Tharam’.
In 2011, Amrita Rao came up with only one film named ‘Love You…Mr. Kalkakar’, S. Directed by Manasvi. Here she played the lead role of Ritu opposite Tusshar Kapoor.
