Apart from Konkani, he is also proficient in Marathi, English, and Hindi. She did her schooling at Canosa Convent Girls School, located in Mumbai. She later joined the prestigious Sophia College to pursue philosophy. Preetika Rao, her sister is a columnist, model, and a southern film actress.

During her college life, Amrita Rao auditioned for a Fairever face cream advertisement. Sooner or later, she appeared in several commercials and did various photo shoots. Amrita Rao first established her foot in the glamorous world of Bollywood through the 2002 film ‘Ab Ke Baras’ directed by Raj Kanwar. She acted with Arya Babbar for the first time. After this, in 2003, she acted with Shahid Kapoor in ‘Ishq Vishk’ directed by Ken Ghosh. The film became a huge success at the box office and Amrita’s portrayal of the character Payal was highly appreciated and she became an overnight star.

This was soon followed by Indra Kumar’s comedy flick ‘Masti’ (2004) starring Amrita Rao, Vivek Oberoi, Aftab Shivdasani, Lara Dutta, Riteish Deshmukh, Ajay Devgan, Tara Sharma and Genelia D’Souza. She then appeared in the film ‘Main Hoon Na’ starring Shah Rukh Khan and Zayed Khan, written and directed by Farah Khan. The film was a super hit in theaters and Amrita received much praise for her performance in the film.

In 2005, Amrita appeared in Mahesh Manjrekar’s ‘Wah! If life is like this! ‘, and John Matthew Mathen’s musical thriller ‘Shikhar’ starring Ajay Devgan, Bipasha Basu and Shahid Kapoor.

The following year in 2009, Amrita played the character of Nandini in Ajit Pal Mangat’s cricket-based film ‘Vijay’. She also played the role of Mansi in Neeraj Vora’s ‘Shortcut’ opposite the famous Arshad Warsi. ‘Shortcut’ was a remake of a Malayalam blockbuster flick named ‘Udhaananu Tharam’.

In 2011, Amrita Rao came up with only one film named ‘Love You…Mr. Kalkakar’, S. Directed by Manasvi. Here she played the lead role of Ritu opposite Tusshar Kapoor.
